Ordering a device online
A phone or computer ordered from a foreign website is taxed like any online purchase, whatever its value: import duty, TPI where it applies and VAT, plus the post office’s or carrier’s handling fees, paid on delivery.
Bringing a device back from a trip
- Residents of Morocco: apart from personal belongings, gifts and purchases brought back are exempt up to MAD 2,000 in total. Beyond that, a new phone or computer must be declared and taxed.
- Moroccans living abroad (MRE): personal items in use, including a laptop, come in without formalities. Gifts for family are exempt up to MAD 25,000 a year.
- Foreign visitors: their personal devices (phone, computer, camera) enter under temporary admission and must leave with them.
- More than one telecom device: ANRT approval is required.
Do you have to register your phone’s IMEI?
To date, no official text from Moroccan Customs or ANRT requires registering the IMEI of a phone that is imported or brought back from a trip. Be wary of websites offering paid “IMEI registration”.
