Moroccans living abroad (MRE)
| Situation | Allowance |
|---|---|
| Holiday stay (MRE working abroad) | Gifts for family up to MAD 25,000 per calendar year, once a year, not all on one type of item |
| Returning for good | Non-commercial items up to MAD 40,000 (raised in 2026), used furniture, one household appliance per category and used tools up to MAD 150,000 |
Furniture, household appliances, TVs, mopeds and carpets beyond the first are excluded from the MAD 25,000 allowance. Items above it can be left in customs storage for 45 days.
Foreign visitors
Visitors get the same tobacco, alcohol and perfume quantities, and gifts up to MAD 2,000. Their personal items (camera, video camera, phone, computer…) enter under temporary admission, with no formalities, and must leave with them.
When leaving, they can claim a VAT refund on purchases of at least MAD 2,000 including VAT made the same day from the same seller: show the goods, invoice and sales slip before boarding. Food, tobacco and medicines are excluded.
Cash
- Foreign-currency banknotes and bearer instruments must be declared in writing on entry and exit when they reach the equivalent of MAD 100,000. Below that, declaring is still useful to justify taking the money out again or depositing it in a bank.
- Dirham banknotes are limited to MAD 2,000 when entering or leaving Morocco.
- Failing to declare foreign currency on exit carries a fine of half the undeclared amount.
Restricted products
- Drones: an import licence is required, even for a temporary stay; otherwise they are seized.
- Phones: more than one telecom device requires approval from ANRT, the telecoms regulator.
- Medicines: allowed for personal use with a prescription or medical certificate.
- Animal and plant products: subject to health checks by ONSSA, the food safety authority.
- Hunting weapons: authorisation from the national police (DGSN). Weapons of war, narcotics and counterfeits are banned.
- New goods in commercial quantities: they count as a commercial import, with its formalities.
